The amfAR Gala will honor Ava DuVernay this year. On September 3rd during the Venice Film Festival, amfAR, the Foundation for AIDS Research, will honor the 50-year-old filmmaker with the Award of Inspiration.

“We are thrilled to be returning to Venice for what promises to be a festive evening raising funds to advance our life-saving HIV cure research,” said Kevin Robert Frost, CEO of amfAR.

We’re honored to present Ava DuVernay with our Award of Inspiration, and we’re very appreciative to our chairs, sponsors, and kind supporters for making this event possible, he concluded. In addition to gratefully acknowledging Mastercard’s assistance, we owe gratitude to Chopard and Red Sea International Film Festival for their ongoing generosity.

This year’s black-tie gala and supper will be held at Venice’s La Misericordia and feature performances by singers Rita Ora and Leona Lewis.

Among the celebrities that attended the amfAR gala the year before were Casey Affleck, Marisa Tomei, Jodie Turner-Smith, Patricia Clarkson, Rachel Brosnahan, Trace Lysette, and Zooey Deschanel.

The ‘A Wrinkle in Time’ director said in October 2020 that she never imagined she would become a successful director.

“It makes me think about everything I missed out on because I didn’t become a filmmaker until I was in my 30s,” “Selma” director Ava DuVernay said to PEOPLE.

I had no idea that a black woman could be a filmmaker when these girls were their age. I had no notion a woman could hold the position of director. I had never witnessed it.
