The prosecution requested that the judge sentence Lanez, 31, whose real name is Daystar Peterson, to 13 years in prison.
Rapper Tory Lanez was found guilty of shooting Megan Thee Stallion in the foot in the Hollywood Hills little over three years ago, and he was given a 10-year jail sentence on Tuesday.
Judge David Herriford of the Los Angeles Superior Court handed down the punishment after the prosecution had requested a 13-year state prison term and the defense team had argued for their client’s release on probation.
The 31-year-old Canadian celebrity was found guilty on Dec. 23 of one felony count of each of assault with a semiautomatic handgun, possessing an unlicensed firearm in a vehicle while it was loaded, and recklessly firing a firearm.
Since being ordered to be taken into custody immediately after the jury’s judgment was announced, Lanez has been imprisoned.
Megan stated in a statement read aloud by Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney Kathy Ta during Monday’s all-day session, “I have not experienced a single day of peace since I was viciously shot by the defendant.” “I’m recovering and getting better slowly but surely, but I’ll never be the same.”
The hip-hop artist, who gave testimony during the trial, admitted that she had second thoughts about appearing in person to make the statement, but that she “simply could not bring myself to be in a room with Tory again.”
She encouraged Judge David Herriford to impose a severe punishment and pleaded with him not to interpret her absence as showing apathy.
After Herriford had lawyers for both sides discuss each aspect of his prospective punishment, the judge was supposed to sentence Lanez on Monday during a hearing that typically lasts only a few hours. However, the hearings evolved into a lengthy two-day session. Seven witnesses, including Lanez’s father and the mother of his 6-year-old kid, were also permitted to testify before the judge about Lanez’s philanthropic contributions, his traumatic background, and his devoted parenting.
The 31-year-old Lanez, whose real name is Daystar Peterson, is being sentenced to 13 years in prison, according to the prosecution. Lanez was found guilty of three felonies: assault with a semiautomatic weapon, possession of a loaded, unregistered handgun in a motor vehicle, and careless discharge of a firearm.
Lanez’s attorneys argued in a sentencing document that he should receive merely probation and be let out of jail so that he may enroll in a residential drug rehabilitation program. They intend to challenge his sentence.
Lanez’s destiny probably won’t be known until Tuesday afternoon since there are still a number of matters that need to be discussed and settled before sentence.
Megan stated at the trial that Lanez had yelled for her to dance as she walked away from an SUV in which they had been traveling in the summer of 2020 and had shot the gun at the back of her feet. They had just left Kylie Jenner’s Hollywood Hills house party.
